Eugene J. Sheedy, DDS, the longtime Bethlehem dentist known to nearly everyone as “Gene-o”, died peacefully on June 23, 2026, at Penn Presbyterian Medical Center in Philadelphia. He was 79.
For more than 40 years, Dr. Sheedy cared for the smiles of the Lehigh Valley from his practice in Bethlehem, where he faithfully served generations of patients and remained actively practicing until his passing. To those patients he was a trusted, steady presence; to everyone else, he was simply a friend.
Four Decades in Bethlehem
Born in Plainfield, New Jersey, Eugene was the son of the late Dr. John J. Sheedy and Mary Agnes (McGee) Sheedy. He attended St. Mary’s School and graduated from Plainfield High School before earning a Bachelor of Science in Biology from Marian University in Indianapolis, and went on to receive his Doctor of Dental Surgery degree from Georgetown University.
He proudly served his country as a Dental Officer in the United States Navy. Following his military service, he practiced dentistry in Boston, where he also served as a clinical professor at Harvard School of Dental Medicine, before establishing the Bethlehem practice that would become his life’s work.
Dedicated to his profession and his community, Eugene volunteered for many years at the Muhlenberg Hospital Dental Clinic and provided dental examinations for children through his work with the Bethlehem Area School District. He was a member of the American Dental Association, the Pennsylvania Dental Association and the Fleet Reserve Association, as well as St. Thomas More Catholic Church in Allentown.
A Family Rooted in the Lehigh Valley
A proud American, Eugene cherished his family’s deep roots in the Lehigh Valley and their long tradition of military service. Family history recounts that his ancestors helped conceal the Liberty Bell during the American Revolution, while his father and uncles served their nation during World War II as members of the Medical Corps and as paratroopers.
A Life Fully Embraced
Away from the office, Eugene embraced life wholeheartedly. He loved to travel and chase a good adventure, from windswept coastlines to remote hot springs, never happier than when he was out in the world with the people he loved.

He was also a devoted golfer, and he celebrated one of the sport’s rarest achievements: a hole-in-one at Saw Mill Golf Course in Stockertown. In a message to a friend afterward, he recounted the moment in his own words, a 5-iron from 178 yards on the seventh hole. “The best part was that I saw it roll in,” he wrote.

Eugene had a lifelong sense of adventure.
Above all, those who knew Gene-o knew a man of remarkable generosity, someone who, as his family put it, would give the shirt off his back to help a stranger. He had a soft spot for animals, too, doting on the rescue dogs the family loved as their own.

He is survived by his beloved wife of 43 years, Leonor M. (Rodriguez) Sheedy, and his daughter, Alexandra L. Sheedy-Rodriguez, Esq., of Miami, Florida.
Services
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday, June 27, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. at St. Thomas More Catholic Church, 1040 Flexer Avenue, Allentown. A calling hour will be held in the church from 10:00 a.m. until the time of Mass.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Abandoned Pet Rescue of Fort Lauderdale, Florida, the no-kill shelter where his beloved grand-dogs were rescued.
