From Steel to Sightseeing: The Lehigh Valley's Tourism Boom Now Tops $1.4 Billion

The Lehigh Valley's visitor economy has grown into a $1.4 billion powerhouse, supporting roughly 26,000 jobs and drawing 16.6 million visitors a year, according to the latest tourism figures from Discover Lehigh Valley.

Once known primarily for cement and steel, the Lehigh Valley has quietly built one of the most dynamic tourism economies in Pennsylvania. New data shows the region's visitors now pump an estimated $1.4 billion into the local economy each year, money that flows into hotels, restaurants, shops, and attractions across Lehigh and Northampton counties and sustains tens of thousands of local jobs.

“These numbers reflect a destination that has real momentum,” said Alex Michaels, president and CEO of Discover Lehigh Valley, the region's official tourism promotion agency.

The Headline Numbers

The scale of the visitor economy comes through in three figures:

  • $1.4 billion in annual economic impact from tourism and visitor spending.

  • 26,000 jobs supported across the two-county region.

  • 16.6 million visitors a year, spanning day-trippers, festival crowds, and overnight guests.

Don Cunningham, president and CEO of the Lehigh Valley Economic Development Corporation, said the sector has matured into a pillar of the regional economy in its own right. “Tourism has grown into a job producing sector all of its own,” he said.

A Decade of Hotel Growth

The infrastructure to host those visitors has expanded alongside demand. The region now offers more than 7,500 hotel rooms, with roughly 600 additional rooms expected to come online by the end of 2027, an increase of about 18% over the decade.

That building boom reflects developer confidence that the Lehigh Valley's pull as a destination is durable, not a passing spike. “There's national data that shows tourism is a key component of getting people here,” said Katelyn Mack, president of Linc Lehigh Valley.

ArtsQuest and the Festival Economy

Few organizations illustrate the trend better than ArtsQuest, the Bethlehem-based nonprofit behind Musikfest and the SteelStacks campus. ArtsQuest generated a record $192.7 million in economic impact in 2025, a 34% jump over the prior year. Musikfest alone accounted for roughly $121 million of that total, cementing the free music festival as one of the region's single biggest economic events.

What's Drawing the Crowds

The Lehigh Valley's appeal is spread across a deep roster of attractions rather than a single marquee draw. Visitors fill Dorney Park & Wildwater Kingdom in the summer, pack the PPL Center for Lehigh Valley Phantoms hockey and concerts, and explore family destinations like the Crayola Experience, the Da Vinci Science Center, and the Allentown Art Museum. Smaller venues, from Archer Music Hall to the Easton Farmers' Market, keep downtowns busy throughout the week.

Maggie Reilly, director of asset management at City Center Group, noted that those smaller venues now draw people downtown multiple times a week, not just for one-off events.

Bethlehem added a global calling card in 2024, when its historic Moravian Church settlement was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, a designation shared with only a handful of locations in the United States and one that tourism officials expect to keep drawing international visitors for years to come.

Why It Matters

For a region that has spent decades reinventing itself, the tourism figures are more than a marketing milestone. Visitor spending supports local jobs, fills tax coffers, and underwrites the restaurants, venues, and events that residents enjoy year-round. As hotel capacity grows and signature events like Musikfest post record numbers, the Lehigh Valley's identity as a destination, not just a place to pass through on the way to somewhere else, continues to solidify.
