Lehigh Gap Nature Center: From Superfund Site to Wellness Sanctuary

There is a place along the Appalachian Mountains near Slatington where a once-barren mountainside has been brought back to life. Lehigh Gap Nature Center sits on 756 acres of land that was so degraded by industrial pollution that it was designated a Superfund site. Today, it is a thriving wildlife refuge with 13 miles of trails, and it stands as the first and only environmental education center in the United States built on a former Superfund site.

The Restoration

The story of Lehigh Gap is a story of what happens when people decide to heal a landscape rather than abandon it. Through years of revegetation and ecological restoration, the barren hillsides have been transformed into habitat that supports diverse plant and animal life. The trails adjoin the Appalachian Trail and the D&L Trail, connecting the center to the broader network of outdoor spaces that define the Lehigh Valley's wellness landscape.

Nature as Wellness

You do not need a gym membership to improve your health. Sometimes you just need to walk in the woods. Lehigh Gap offers that opportunity on a scale that few places in the valley can match. Thirteen miles of trails wind through the Kittatinny Ridge location, with abundant wildlife and views of the Lehigh River below. The center runs educational programs for all ages, connecting visitors to the ecological story of the land they are walking through.

A Second Chance

Lehigh Gap Nature Center is proof that damaged land can be restored and that wellness extends beyond the individual body to the health of the places where we live. Walking these trails, you are walking on soil that was once written off as beyond saving. It is as inspiring a wellness story as you will find anywhere in the Lehigh Valley.
