If you want to understand what makes Bethlehem's South Side tick, show up on a First Friday. On the first Friday of every month, from 6 to 9 PM, this neighborhood comes alive with art, music, and the kind of community energy that you cannot manufacture.
Door to Door
The concept is simple. Galleries, eclectic shops, restaurants, and cultural spaces throughout the South Side open their doors and invite the public in. Each venue typically offers food, music, and art. You walk from door to door, ducking into a gallery here, catching a live musician there, grabbing a bite from a restaurant that has set up a table on the sidewalk. Each month features a different theme, keeping things fresh for regulars.
First Fridays happen every month except July and August, when Musikfest takes over the calendar. The 2026 dates run January through June and September through December. It is free, it is walkable, and it is one of the best ways to spend an evening in the Lehigh Valley.
The South Side Arts District
First Friday did not create the South Side Arts District, but it helped define it. The monthly event has been the heartbeat of this neighborhood's creative identity, drawing both established and emerging artists into the public eye. The walkable blocks between 3rd and 4th Streets, anchored by the Banana Factory and extending toward Touchstone Theatre and Godfrey Daniels, form a dense creative corridor that rivals neighborhoods in cities many times Bethlehem's size.
More Than Gallery Openings
What separates First Friday from a typical gallery opening is the energy. Families bring their kids. College students from Lehigh and Moravian mix with longtime South Side residents. The atmosphere is casual and welcoming, not stuffy or exclusive. You do not need to know anything about art to enjoy First Friday. You just need to show up, walk around, and see what catches your eye. That accessibility is what has kept people coming back month after month for years.
