The Easton Farmers Market: Shopping at the Oldest Outdoor Market in America

On July 8, 1776, Centre Square in Easton was the site of one of only three public readings of the Declaration of Independence. Long before that historic day, the same square was already home to a farmers market. The Easton Farmers Market has been running since 1752, and 274 years later, it is still going strong every Saturday morning.

America's Longest Running Market

The Easton Farmers Market is the longest continuously running open-air market in America. It originally operated in Centre Square but moved to Scott Park during the pandemic for more space, and the new location stuck. Saturdays from 9 AM to 1 PM, local farmers and producers set up their stalls with the kind of food that makes you rethink what fresh actually means.

Local and Real

Everything at the market is locally grown and produced. Most produce is naturally or organically grown. All meat and dairy is antibiotic and hormone free, pasture raised. These are not resellers trucking in produce from distant states. These are farmers who live and work in the Lehigh Valley and surrounding counties, selling what they grew or made with their own hands.

The market runs year round, which means even in January you can find local vendors braving the cold to sell winter produce, baked goods, and preserved foods. The summer months are the peak, when the tables overflow with tomatoes, corn, berries, and herbs that taste like they just came out of the ground. Because they did.

A Community Tradition

The Easton Farmers Market is not just a place to buy food. It is a Saturday morning tradition. Regulars come for the produce and stay for the conversations. Families bring their kids. Dogs wander on leashes. Live music sometimes fills the background. It has been this way for nearly three centuries, and there is no reason to think it will change anytime soon.
