From the trailhead on Alpine Street in Emmaus, it takes about five minutes of walking before the town disappears. The trees close in, the sounds of traffic fade, and suddenly you are in four hundred forty acres of protected woodland that feels like it belongs in the mountains, not on the edge of a Lehigh Valley suburb.
South Mountain Preserve has been permanently protected since 1973, managed by the Wildlands Conservancy as a nature sanctuary that is open to the public year round. Nearly twelve miles of trails wind through the property, offering everything from easy strolls to rocky ridge scrambles with sweeping views of the Lehigh Valley below.
The Trails
The most popular route is a 3.8 mile loop that combines the Alpine Street Trail, the Uplands Trail, and the Trout Run Trail. The loop involves about 550 feet of elevation gain, enough to get your heart rate up without requiring mountaineering skills. Rocky outcrops along the ridge provide natural viewpoints where you can see across the Valley on clear days.
The Alpine Street Trail runs 1.64 miles and serves as the main artery into the preserve. The Uplands Trail at 1.14 miles climbs to the higher elevations. The Trout Run Trail at 1.21 miles follows a creek through a shaded valley that stays cool even on the hottest summer days.
Additional trails including Mountain Top, Bug, Log, and Bloodroot extend the network for those who want longer outings or quieter paths. The Kline's Lane Trail is ADA accessible and connects the preserve to Emmaus's Klines Lane Open Space, providing an easy entry point for visitors of all abilities.
What You'll Find
The preserve is a mix of mature hardwood forest, rocky outcrops, and stream valleys. In spring, wildflowers including trillium, bloodroot, and mayapple carpet the forest floor. Summer brings deep shade and the sound of running water. Fall turns the canopy into a display of red, orange, and gold that rivals any drive through the Poconos.
Wildlife is abundant. White tailed deer are common. Birds including warblers, woodpeckers, and hawks are regularly spotted. The streams support populations of trout and native amphibians.
The Wildlands Conservancy
The Wildlands Conservancy has been protecting and stewarding natural lands in the Lehigh Valley since 1973. South Mountain Preserve is one of their flagship properties, and the care they put into trail maintenance and habitat management is evident. The trails are well marked with blazes, fallen trees are cleared promptly, and erosion controls keep the paths in good condition even after heavy rains.
Why It Matters
In a rapidly developing region, permanently protected green space is priceless. South Mountain Preserve gives Emmaus and the surrounding communities a place to hike, run, walk dogs, and reconnect with nature without getting in a car and driving an hour. It is the kind of amenity that makes a community special, the kind of thing people mention when they explain why they love living here.
The main entrance is at 554 Alpine Street in Emmaus. There is no admission fee. The preserve is open from dawn to dusk. Bring good shoes, water, and a willingness to forget about your phone for a while. The mountain will take care of the rest.
