Jacobsburg: Where the Famous Henry Rifle Was Born and Eighteen Miles of Trails Begin

Jacobsburg Environmental Education Center sits on more than eleven hundred acres of wooded hills and stream valleys in Northampton County, about fifteen minutes north of Easton. It is one of the most accessible and underrated outdoor spaces in the Lehigh Valley, offering eighteen and a half miles of trails for hiking, biking, and horseback riding.

But Jacobsburg has a story that goes beyond recreation. This land is the site of the Jacobsburg National Historic District, where the famous Henry Rifle was manufactured. The weapon that helped arm the American frontier was born in these hills, and the history is woven into every trail and clearing.

The Trails

Eighteen and a half miles of trails wind through mixed hardwood forest, crossing streams and passing through meadows. The terrain is varied enough to keep things interesting without being so challenging that casual hikers are excluded. Mountain bikers share some trails, and designated equestrian paths accommodate horseback riders.

The creek valleys are especially beautiful in spring, when wildflowers bloom along the water and the forest floor comes alive with color. In fall, the hardwood canopy turns gold and crimson, making Jacobsburg one of the best leaf peeping spots that doesn't require a highway drive.

The History

The Jacobsburg National Historic District lies almost entirely within the park boundaries. In the late 1700s and early 1800s, the Henry family operated a gun works here that produced the rifle that would carry their name into legend. The Henry Rifle, and later the rifles made by the family at their Boulton factory, were known for their accuracy and reliability.

Interpretive displays throughout the park explain the history of the gun works and the broader industrial heritage of the site. Walking these trails, you are walking on ground that has been in continuous use for centuries, from the Lenape people who first inhabited the area to the industrialists who built the gun works to the families who hike here today.

Environmental Education

As its name suggests, Jacobsburg is an environmental education center as well as a recreation area. Programs run throughout the year for school groups, scouts, and the general public. Topics range from stream ecology and wildlife identification to forest management and the relationship between humans and the natural landscape.

The center's streams support healthy populations of trout and provide hands on learning opportunities for young anglers and aspiring naturalists.

Getting There

Jacobsburg is easy to reach from anywhere in the Lehigh Valley. Multiple access points and parking areas make it simple to start a hike from different sections of the park. The main entrance is off Belfast Road in Bushkill Township.

Pack a lunch, bring water, and plan to spend a few hours. Jacobsburg is the kind of place that rewards an unhurried visit. The trails are long enough for a serious hike and quiet enough for a peaceful walk. Either way, you'll leave feeling like you discovered something that most people in the Valley don't know about, even though it's been right here for centuries.
